Pharm2Table Summit 2015 - Pharmacy Podcast Episode 257

Returning Pharmacy Podcast Guest - Pharmacist Jamie, Jamie Mask talks about the upcoming virtual conference Pharm2Table.

How often do we hear that pharmacists, especially community pharmacists, “don’t have a seat at the healthcare table?” We bemoan the fact that our standing in the healthcare universe has declined, and are ever fearful that our profession will be replaced by automation and vending machines.

Not the most encouraging thing for Pharm D candidates to hear. Well, we believe that it is time that we become the authors of our own destiny, and that all begins with future community pharmacists. The Pharm2Table Virtual Summit seeks to be the catalyst in developing actionable steps by exposing Pharm D candidates to 3 “tables”: Rebranding our profession, pursing next practices and exploring expanded reimbursement models. Pharmacy, Digital Health, and Big-Pharma Pharmacy Podcast Episode 256

John Nosta - Digital Health Philosopher, with Nosta Lab returns to the Pharmacy Podcast Show to discuss Pharmacy, Digital Health, and Big Pharma. He’s going to make them an offer they can’t refuse.

We may understand the reasoning of pharma, yet leveraging the power of digital health starts with tradition. Big-pharma is very conservative and old habits are difficult to change, especially when the resistance to change can includes barriers like executive management’s unchallenged comfort zones based on the legalities of pharmaceutical manufacturing and the FDA’s over-zealous ‘hand outs’ of million dollar penalties. These reasons for the push back on digital health are understandable, in theory, but completely manageable.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers could benefit greatly with the right partnerships with community pharmacies for patient disease state monitoring, data gathering, and communicating with the inclusion of digital health, mobile health and telehealth technologies. With proper implementation, program management, and patient-centric customer support, big-pharma could gain measurable real time insights about their medications and patient responses, drive adherence, and create customized medication synchronization offerings to ensure the community pharmacy does its part with follow through.

The Nutrition Factor in Pharmacy - Pharmacy Podcast Episode 255

Pharmacy Podcast Government Affairs Strategist Ron Lanton talks with the president of Trovita Health Science nutritional products for patient's special needs - William Brown.

About Trovita:

Our mission was borne of a critical need in the marketplace for nutritional products that provide higher quality ingredients, without the use of added sugar, corn syrup and artificial ingredients. We recognized that health care professionals and consumers are seeking products that fuel strength and recovery, especially when a person’s choice of nutritional intake is limited by a disease or medical treatment. Too many of the complete nutritional products available today – whether ready to drink shakes, or enteral nutrition products – are providing calories primarily from cheap ingredients, including sugar and corn syrup, and modest protein levels that don’t allow people to reach recommended intake levels, and which in most cases are not well absorbed.

Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA)

http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/DrugIntegrityandSupplyChainSecurity/DrugSupplyChainSecurityAct/

The Drug Quality and Security Act (DQSA), was signed into law by President Obama on November 27, 2013Title II of DQSA, the Drug Supply Chain Security Act, outlines critical steps to build an electronic, interoperable system to identify and trace certain prescription drugs as they are distributed in the United States.

Ten years after enactment, the system will facilitate the exchange of information at the individual package level about where a drug has been in the supply chain. The new system will:

  • enable verification of the legitimacy of the drug product identifier down to the package level;
  • enhance detection and notification of illegitimate products in the drug supply chain; and
  • facilitate more efficient recalls of drug products.

Drug manufacturers, wholesale drug distributors, repackagers, and many dispensers (primarily pharmacies) will be called on to work in cooperation with FDA to develop the new system over the next 10 years.
